Individual Leadership Development

Purpose

The ILD is an experience intended to increase individual and organizational performance through developing self understanding, leadership, and interpersonal skills.

Objectives

To assist the individual in assessing the following as a means of personal and professional growth:

  • What is my current role as a leader in the company?
  • What are the abilities and skills that I need to be a successful manager today?
  • Where am I going and what are the abilities and skills that I will need in the future?

Overview

Every effort is intended to make this a very relaxed, pleasant, and rewarding experience. Best described as “about you and for you,” the three days are a comfortable exploration of the above objectives. The guided experience is accomplished through a variety of activities, materials, video tapes, and discussions—including 360° feedback from leaders, peers, and direct reports. Activities are self-report and self scored. The participant leaves the session with study materials for continued growth and all of the activities. No copies are held. Nothing goes into the personnel files. Discussions are confidential. The participant feels, in may ways, in charge of the session.

At the beginning, the participant is asked to think about what he/she wants to accomplish. A good approach is to ask, “In order for me to leave this session thinking, ‘Wow, what a wonderful opportunity! What a great use of my time and the company’s resources. I’m so glad that I did this!’ What should happen between now and when I leave that will allow me to feel this way?” This information permits many topics and activities to be fitted to the needs of the individual.

The Process

  • Each day is usually 8-9 hours with an hour or more needed in the evenings to review the materials and prepare for the next day.
  • The sessions often include lunches with the participant’s leader and other colleagues.
  • Sessions are held in a convenient location in a quiet conference room with a TV/VCR.
  • Casual business attire is appropriate.

What the ILD Is Not

  • The session is not psychoanalytical.
  • The facilitator is not a clinical psychological.
  • It is not designed to “fix” poor performers, but rather, to enhance high potential.

Follow-up

Participants are encouraged to use the facilitator as a resource, coach, and cheerleader.
